The Gen X Editorial Roadmap
Three strategic documents to help local newspapers serve the Gen X reader who pays, votes, and reads — the audience whose loyalty sustains your business through the next decade.
Gen X is the audience local newspapers cannot afford to lose. They trust local newspapers more than any other generation, vote at eighty percent, and read what you produce. This roadmap shows you which Gen X audiences to defend, where to invest for growth, and what to plan for later.
Built from a national survey of 3,000 U.S. adults by Coda Ventures (Gen X filtered crosstab, n=1,168). For editors, publishers, and audience-development leads working on Gen X strategy.
What the data tells you about Gen X
Five findings shape the strategy that follows. Each is replicated across multiple data points in the study; each carries a direct editorial implication.
Gen X wants 65% serious local news, 35% lifestyle. The ratio holds across every Gen X subsegment within three percentage points.
Affluent Gen X ($75K+) voted at 91% in the last election. They lead on digital newspaper access (+10 pp), podcast use (+9 pp), and demand truthful, unbiased reporting more than any other group (+10 pp).
Established Gen X (ages 50–59) trust local newspapers at 54%, the highest of any subsegment, generation, or media category in the study. They're 63% of Gen X.
The gap between current digital newspaper usage and what Gen X says they want from a newspaper website. The largest growth signal in the study, and the capability that decides whether Affluent Gen X is real for your operation or aspirational.
Affluent Gen X is the highest-yield growth audience in the data. But they're gated by digital capability most local newspapers don't yet have. Until that's built, the foundational play is defending Established Gen X and Gen X Men, the audiences that already pay, vote, and read. Younger Gen X (45–49) is a long-term build for almost every member.
The diagnostic
Nine questions, about five minutes. The first five place you in one of three capability tiers. The next four capture your strategic intent for the next twenty-four months. Together they shape which version of the roadmap actually applies to you.
Score yourself honestly. The recommendations are only useful if they match what you actually have, not what you wish you had.
